COSTA VERDE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
SAYULITA MEXICO
In September of 2022 I visited Costa Verde International School in Sayulita Mexico. Although this school is not technically involved in hosting Forest Schooling, they shifted to an outdoor classroom model amidst the Pandemic in 2020. After speaking with the Director, Richard, he explained how teaching beyond the classroom was a nice change of pace and provided relief for staff. The school kept this model of nature-based education for an entire year. Although Richard would have loved to create a long-lasting model for outdoor learning, the local families were resistant and ultimately asked to get their children back in the classroom. While forest and Nature-Based education offer a multitude of benefits for staff and students alike, it’s clear there is still work needed in order to help the state in Mexico, as well as the parents understand the value in this style of education.
